The Ugly Truth

The reports of the torture at Abu Ghraib appear to be the tip of the iceberg. We have lost any moral high ground, if we ever had any to begin with, regarding our military actions in Iraq.

These atrocities are symptomatic of something very ugly happening in Iraq since the US arrived. As far back as last June, there have been reports of troops targeting civilians. We have had videos or American troops murdering wounded Iraqis. We have heard of the overly zealous killing of civilians in Fallujah. We have heard of American troops who "...viewed Iraqis as untermenschen - the Nazi expression for sub-humans".

Something is rotten in Iraq. The fault, dear Brutus, is not in the stars, but in ourselves, that we are underlings. We have trusted the stars of this drama long enough. We have taken a passive role, assuming that those in charge know best. Obviously, they do not. We must now say clearly, enough is enough. As a Christian, who happens to be an American, I cannot be silent. These actions do not represent my faith or my nation. They must be condemned, those responsible, including the leadership, must be held accountable, and we must pull US troops out of Iraq immediately.
